Who is eligible to apply for the Samuel Hall Scholarship?

High school seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who live in Iredell County, NC, or who are descendants of those who lived on the Hall plantation (living anywhere in the U.S.).

How much is the scholarship award?

For the 2025 school year, four scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded.

When is the application deadline?

All applications must be uploaded by March 31, 2025.

Do I need to submit a FAFSA Form for this Scholarship?

Form as soon as possible so you can get your Student Aid Index before the scholarship application deadline. FAFSA applications can be submitted at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

Do I need to attend a specific school to qualify?

No, but scholarships are only awarded to students attending accredited colleges or universities.

How can I confirm if I am a descendant of someone who lived on the Hall plantation?

If you believe you may be a descendant, we encourage you to reach out through the contact form on our website. Genealogical support may be available.

Is this scholarship based on financial need?

Yes, financial need is one of the criteria used to score your application. Please see the scoring rubric.

Can students outside North Carolina apply?

Yes — if they can show that they had an ancestor who lived on the Hall plantation.

Who selects the scholarship recipients?

A review panel from the Samuel Hall Executive Board reviews the applications and makes the final selection decisions.

Is this scholarship affiliated with any religious organization?

Yes. It is a ministry of Freedom Presbyterian Church, though students of all backgrounds are welcome to apply. The applicant's religious faith (or lack of a religious faith) is not considered in evaluating their applications.

Can the scholarship be used for trade schools or community colleges?

Yes — as long as the institution is accredited.
